Community Grows in Brewster

By Judy Marano

During this very challenging time, the Cultural Arts Coalition is working hard to provide entertainment and programming online for our community. The Coalition urges all to periodically check the website at www.culturalarts.com for new and exciting offerings. Despite the pandemic, the Coalition's Garden Around the Corner project is in full swing, albeit with masks and social distancing! Headed by Master Gardener and Volunteer Coordinator, Anita Conway, the project is being executed by several dedicated people, call them "Garden Goddesses", who are watering, weeding, and transforming our beautiful parking lot garden. Board director, Olenna Truskett, comments, “The garden is like a moving artwork: Each day Mother Nature and the Goddesses mix up the palette.” Last year, this small canvas space yielded over 200 lbs. of produce that were delivered directly to the Putnam Community Action Partnership for distribution into the homes of community members in need. CAC is hopeful that this year will be even bigger, more fruitful, and more beautiful. Many people are struggling with the loss of jobs and concern about Covid-19, so grocery shopping, especially for produce, can be cost-prohibitive. We, at the Cultural Arts Coalition, recognize that helping our neighbors in an integral part of celebrating the community with transformative and inspiring arts!

July Water Bill Correction

To Residents, Business Owners and Outside Water Users,

The Village of Brewster would like to inform all water users that the bills that were sent out on July 1,2020 are incorrect, but please know that this mistake will be remediated.

As many of you have noticed, we have a new bill layout as designed by our new program that we are using for billings. This new software is similar to our old software, but is still in the development stages as we continue to work to move all of our processes to a cloud-based server.

With that being said, there was an oversight in the water billing and all residents were charged the new rates for water from the previous reading date of March to April15, 2020, which should not have happened. The new rates were put into place on April15,2020 and the usage prior to that date should have been charged at the old rate.

After working with the programmers on this issue, we are able to give a credit to all water bills that are due August 3,2020, for the water used, that should have been charged at the old rate. If you have already paid your bill, you will receive a credit on your October water bill

for that amount. If you have not paid your bill, you may contact the Village Office for your new bill amount or you may choose to receive a credit on your next bill.

If you would like a breakdown of the calculations for the bills, please contact the Village Office at 845-279-3760 or email the Village Clerk at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The Village of Brewster Offices apologize for the error and the confusion it caused this community. We are all suffering in different ways and the most important notion to remember is that we are all in this together. I, as Village Clerk, apologize for this oversight and would like to assure the public that this will not happen again.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Sincerely,

Michelle Chiudina Village Clerk & Treasurer

Thank You Essential Businesses

As businesses are slowly starting to be able to open their doors again, the Village of Brewster would like to extend a thank you to all of the businesses who were considered essential and were asked to stay open during this time. The Board of Trustees is asking the public to nominate businesses in the Village who have supported their community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. These businesses may have donated food to those in need or were complying with social distancing rules and staying open to serve the public. We will be honoring these businesses at the July 15th Board of Trustee meeting with proclamations, and posting the list on our website. During the month of June, the court staff will be rescheduling those who had their court date postponed due to the COVID-19 shut down. You will receive a letter in the mail prior to your new court date with important information regarding the new court procedures. After June 1st you will be able to reach the court office but please be patient as there are many court dates to reschedule and there are still limited number of people in the office. If you do not receive a letter by July 1, 2020, please send a letter to the Village Court Offices at 50 Main Street Brewster, NY 10509 or call 845-279-4020 to ensure the office has your correct information.

When Court resumes on or after July, 2020, our police officers and staff will be ensuring the safety of all throughout the Court process. Only one person will be allowed in the vestibule at a time and your temperature will be taken with a forehead scanner, then you will be subject to a search of yourself and any bags you have brought with you. If you do not want your temperature to be taken, you will not be allowed to enter the court room. You must provide your own mask to enter the Court room or you will be asked to leave. Those who are waiting to enter the Court house must wait outside and be socially distant from the other patrons who are waiting to enter. Please follow the directions of the police officers and be patient as this is something new for everyone involved.

If you are trying to conduct business with the Village Offices on a day when Court is in session, please call the Village Office at 845-279-3760 and await further instructions.

The Village of Brewster thanks you for your cooperation and appreciates your patience while we adjust to the new normal during this time.
